FUNDINGThe Commission for Reception, Truth and Reconciliation in East Timor is an independent statutory authority. The Commission will be funded entirely from grants and voluntary donations, not from UNTAET or the East Timorese government. An estimated total of US$3.8 million is required for the 2-year project. This includes a preparatory period, the first phase of which was undertaken by an Interim Office and is now completed. All amounts in U.S. dollars
To date, $463,000 have been contributed and a further $1,620,000 pledged. Plans are currently under consideration to rehabilitate Dili's former Balide Prison as the site for the National Office, for which additional funds - not included in the above budget - are required. former Balide Prison
At the completion of the Commission's mandate, the site will be handed over to a community organization to be used as a human rights center and museum. In this way, a significant piece of East Timor's heritage will be preserved and converted to current and long-term use in the service of human rights and reconciliation.
